Denise bought her first “grown-up” bike, a mountain bike,
in 1993 at age 32, to get back in shape after her third child. Destiny ruled and just three years later she met her husband JT at an awards ceremony for a mountain bike race in Helen, Georgia where they were both on the podium in the Sport division. With three kids and a baby in tow they camped and competed at mountain bike venues for the next couple of years.
Along with Fleur de Lis teammate Penny Kephart, Denise was named Louisville Bicycle Club’s off-road racer of the year in 1998, in part for a first place finish in the women’s 35+ division at the epic 24 hours of Canaan. Notably, the ladies accomplished this while both having babies less than a year old!
Later the Everett’s discovered the thrills of road racing which culminated in back-to-back USCF Masters Tandem National championships in 2007 and 2008.
Denise turned to triathlons in 2010 and this year took 2ndout of 41 in her age group in the Austin Ironman 70.3, and 7th out of 77 recently in the Augusta Ironman 70.3 and hopes to qualify for the World championships in 2012.
In the meantime Denise still races an occasional mountain bike or road race and is stoked to be a part of the fun and camaraderie of the Tour de Lis/Bicycle Sport Women’s cycling team!
